Here's a scenario that plays out more often than it should: a homeowner gets a new roof installed by one crew, new vinyl siding put on by another, and gutters replaced by a third company six months later. Every contractor did their individual job without complaint. The reviews were fine. The invoices were paid.
Then, two winters later, water starts appearing inside the wall cavity near the front door. The siding guys say it's a roof problem. The roofer says the gutters are overflowing. The gutter company says everything looks fine from where they're standing.
Sound familiar? That runaround has a name: it's what happens when nobody treats your home's exterior as a single integrated system.
Because here's the thing — your roof, siding, flashing, gutters, and foundation drainage aren't five separate products. They're five components of one job. And when each one gets designed and installed without considering the others, water will find every seam they left unguarded.
How Water Actually Moves Through Your Home's Exterior
To understand why integration matters, you have to follow the water.
Rain hits your roof and immediately starts looking for the fastest path down. Your shingles shed it toward the eaves. Your gutters collect it and push it toward downspouts. Your downspouts dump it at the foundation. Your grading — ideally — moves it away from the house.
At every handoff point in that journey, there's an opportunity for failure. And most of those failure points aren't in the middle of a system — they're at the transitions between systems.
The joint where your roof deck meets the top of your siding? That's a flashing problem. The spot where your downspout terminates three inches from your foundation wall? That's a drainage problem. The gap between your window trim and the siding panel above it? That's a water intrusion waiting to happen — and it's often created when a siding installer doesn't account for what the roofer left behind.
None of these failures happen because someone did bad work in isolation. They happen because no one looked at the whole picture.
The Flashing Blind Spot
Flashing is probably the most misunderstood component in this whole conversation. Most homeowners think of it as a roofing detail — those strips of metal around chimneys, skylights, and vents. And sure, that's part of it. But flashing also governs the relationship between your roof and your siding, and that's where things get complicated fast.
Step flashing, for example, runs along the vertical edges where a roof slope meets a wall — like at a dormer or an addition. It's installed in alternating layers with the roofing material, and it's supposed to integrate with whatever is covering that wall. If your roofer installs step flashing without knowing what type of siding is going up next, or if the siding crew doesn't tie their house wrap and panels correctly into that existing flashing, you've got a gap.
That gap might be invisible from the outside. It might not cause problems for a year or two. But water is patient. It will work that gap every single time it rains, and eventually you'll see the damage — usually in the form of rot, mold, or interior staining — long after the original contractors have moved on.
Gutters Are the Middle Child Nobody Thinks About
Gutters get the least respect in the exterior conversation, but they're arguably the most critical link in the chain. A properly installed gutter system is the thing that keeps roof runoff from hammering your siding, pooling against your foundation, and eroding the grading that's supposed to protect your basement.
The problem is that gutters are often treated as an afterthought — something you add after the roof and siding are done, sized based on aesthetics rather than actual water volume, and terminated wherever is convenient rather than wherever makes hydrological sense.
A gutter that's too small for your roof pitch will overflow during a moderate rain. A downspout that exits onto a flat section of your yard will backfill against your foundation in a heavy storm. And if your grading has settled over the years — which it almost always has — that water has nowhere to go except toward your house.
This is how roofing problems become foundation problems. Not because the roof failed, but because nobody designed the water's exit route from start to finish.
What Integrated Exterior Work Actually Looks Like
When a contractor — or better yet, a contractor who handles multiple exterior systems — approaches a project with integration in mind, the whole process looks different.
It starts with a site assessment that considers drainage before a single shingle is touched. Where does water currently go? Where does it pool? What's the condition of the grading around the foundation? Are the existing downspout locations actually working, or are they just where the last guy put them?
From there, roofing, flashing, and siding details get coordinated before installation begins. That means agreeing on what type of house wrap will be used, how it ties into the roof underlayment at the eaves, and how window and door trim will be flashed relative to the siding panels.
Gutters and downspouts get sized for the actual roof area they're serving — not just swapped out for whatever was there before — and downspout terminations get planned to move water at least four to six feet away from the foundation, accounting for the existing grade.
That's not a radical approach. It's just thorough. But it requires someone who's willing to look past their own scope of work and think about the whole system.
What to Ask Your Contractor Before Anyone Picks Up a Nail Gun
You don't need to be a building scientist to protect yourself here. You just need to ask the right questions.
First: Who is responsible for the transitions? If you're hiring a roofer and a siding contractor separately, get both of them on the phone together before work starts and ask who owns the flashing at the roof-to-wall connection. If there's any ambiguity, that's your answer — you need to resolve it before the job begins.
Second: Is the drainage plan part of the scope? Any exterior contractor worth hiring should be able to tell you where water will go after it leaves the roof. If they look at you blankly, that's a red flag.
Third: Has anyone walked the foundation perimeter? Before a roof replacement, before new gutters, before anything — someone should look at your grading, check your downspout locations, and flag any areas where water is already pooling. If that step gets skipped, you're setting yourself up for the exact problem we've been describing.
